UK welcomes European broadband discussions

Stephen Carter, minister for communications, technology and broadcasting, has expressed his happiness with the beginning of discussions over the future of consumer and office broadband on a European level.
Last week saw a European Council meeting take place on the Electronic Communications and Networks Framework, a forum which Mr Carter described as "critical" for consumer and office broadband.
He said that with broadband now being a "central service for millions", Europe needs to consider how best to deliver universal access, both by connectivity and device.
"It is crucial to the way many of us go about our lives and daily business and increasingly the means of delivering good public services cost effectively," added Mr Carter.
Earlier this month, minister for sustainable development and energy innovation Lord Hunt welcomed the launch of the EU's code of conduct for data centres and data storage.
