'Cut power consumption' managed data centres urged
01/10/2008
Managed data centres need to cut back on their power usage in a bid to be more energy efficient, according to new reports.
Operators were told to rein in their power consumption at the DataCenterDynamics event in Amsterdam.
The group suggested that data centres were increasingly being judged on their energy consumption and the methods they used to save energy.
Tips on energy saving included running fans at optimum rates to match data centre loads and making sure redundancy levels meet availability levels.
Dan Scarborough, CEO of DataCenterDynamics, said that presentations at the event included case studies of companies who had optimised their IT equipment by setting up computer room air conditioners.
"Getting to the heart of the technical issues of data centre operation is what our conferences deliver," he claimed.
Figures released earlier this month by IT specialists IDC showed that the managed data centre network industry grew 17 per cent over 2006 to 2007.
