Outsourcing data storage driven by need for efficiency

Companies are increasingly turning to data storage providers and virtualisation because of the efficiencies it can offer, it has been claimed.
According to IT industry expert Srikant Chakrapani, the change in consumer spending habits and the tough global financial situation has forced many businesses to re-think how they spend their money.
He claims that one of the ways that firms are looking to save cash is by reducing their data storage budgets.
"The past several years of IT procurement have left many IT organizations with underutilized and oversubscribed storage capacity," Mr Chakrapani said.
He added: "Today most of them are taking stock of their existing resources and utilisation patterns inherent in their current IT architecture."
Mr Chakrapani cited an IDC report which shows that keeping data storage in house has hidden costs for things such as data protection, maintenance, labour, floor space and outages.
Recently, Deepak Visweswaraiah, senior director of the Storage Software Group at the India Center of Excellence, told Network Computing that the data storage needs of small and medium sized businesses are not growing at the same rate as larger companies.
