Business continuity expert laments swine flu 'misinformation'
06/05/2009
A business continuity and pandemic expert has claimed that while swine flu requires preparation, misinformation about the disease may be impeding companies' and individuals' abilities to prepare properly.
In an article for Continuity Central, Leslie Whittet claimed that "on present performance", the form of the H1N1 virus known as swine flu is killing fewer people than a normal, seasonal outbreak of flu.
She added that for many companies, business continuity preparations for the potential pandemic could consist of common sense practices which should be adopted when dealing with other diseases as well.
Ms Whittet said: "If you are sick, stay home. If someone comes to work who is obviously sick, send them home. This is not rocket science and it applies as much to gastric bugs as to influenza, or any other communicable disease."
Currently, the risk of swine flu reaching pandemic status is set at five by the World Health Organisation. Level six represents a full-blown pandemic.
