An IT expert has advised companies in the UK to examine their business continuity strategies as the threat from the virulent form of influenza known as swine flu grows.
Nick Jones, an analyst for the risk assessment firm Gartner used his blog to urge UK companies to ensure that their disaster recovery strategies have contingency plans in place for dealing with a pandemic, in case the outbreak reaches those proportions.
He said that businesses should consider how they would operate if they suffered absenteeism rates of around 40 per cent because of the disease.
Mr Jones added: "As you develop and refresh those plans dont forget that mobile / wireless technology has a huge part to play."
Swine flu has already been responsible for more than 100 deaths in Mexico. Currently there are only two confirmed cases in the UK - a couple who returned from holiday in Mexico and are now being treated in a hospital in Scotland.
