Data mobility 'a big challenge' for firms
25/09/2008
Businesses becoming more and more mobile may present themselves with new challenges when it comes to the security of their sensitive data, experts have advised.
The Ponemon Institute, a firm dealing with privacy management, has said that mobility presents increasing challenges for businesses that are devising strategies to keep their data safe.
Safety is "complicated" by mobility and co location, according to Mike Spinney, communications director at the institute, especially with the reliance on technology such as memory sticks and external hard drives.
However, there is no 'one size fits all' solution to data security management, he added, but firms must find plans tailored to their needs.
Businesses should adopt "a strategic initiative that requires a thorough understanding of the organisation's current systems, level of training, types of data collected and used, the industry and more", advised Mr Spinney.
The Home Office dropped a contract with PA Consulting after it transpired that a memory stick - containing the details of 84,000 prisoners - was lost after being left unguarded at the firm's headquarters.
