Consumer website welcomes Ofcom report
09/01/2009
A consumer website has welcomed the findings of the report published yesterday by Ofcom, saying it could enable consumers to get a better estimate of the speeds they will actually receive.
Michael Phillips, product director, of broadbandchoices.co.uk, a division of Consumer Choices, said that the report, which found that home and business broadband speeds are usually slower than advertised, confirms what his organisation suspected.
He added: "This reinforces what we've known for some time so the question is - what will Ofcom do with these findings to help drive change and champion the consumer's cause?"
Mr Phillips called on Ofcom to act on the report's findings by setting up an official independent speed measuring service which all consumers could use to give them an accurate representation of the broadband speeds they are receiving.
Ofcom previously published a voluntary code of conduct, which requires internet service providers to give more accurate estimates of the speed domestic and business broadband users can expect.
