EU: We aim to bring broadband to all

29/09/2008

The European Union (EU) has said it intends to ensure everyone will have access to broadband by 2010.

Areas that do not currently have a broadband connection could be affected by the move, which is part of the EU's review of its Universal Services Obligations (USO).

Viviane Reding, EU Telecoms commissioner, said that making sure all EU members have access to broadband is imperative.

"High speed Internet is the passport to the Information Society and an essential condition for economic growth. This is why it is the commission's policy to make broadband Internet for all Europeans happen by 2010," she elaborated.

Currently, the USO only stipulates that a connection speed of 28.8 kilobits per second should be available to all member states of the EU.

However, this regulation looks set to be altered to incorporate broadband speeds.

Last week, the EU approved plans to introduce a wireless broadband system to the continent and started up a regulatory group, the Body of European Regulators in Telecommunications, during the discussions.
