Business Broadband halted as line is severed
07/04/2009
Businesses and homes in the south of England have been left with a broadband blackout as cables carrying the service were accidentally cut this week, it has been reported.
The area affected by the mishap is East London, where thousands of BT Openreach customers have been left without access to the internet.
A third-party is thought to have inadvertently caused the damage by cutting through an underground cable.
BT has assured its customers that it is currently working to rectify the problem, but admitted that as the cables are located 32 metres below the ground, repair work could take several days to complete.
In a recent status update, the firm described the damage to the line as being "significant".
BT customers also experienced an outage in 2005, which the firm claims was brought about by a fault in its software coupled with a surge in traffic.
