Managed hosting services could be subject to regulation

IT services such as managed hosting and data storage could be subject to regulation in the future, it has been claimed.
According to IT industry research firm Gartner, IT products and services could be regulated by as soon as 2015 and warned the providers of such services to start preparing for the increased liability that will be forced upon them now.
Gartner believes that many IT firms are unprepared to deal with any new regulations, and their businesses processes could suffer as a result.
Richard Hunter, vice-president at Gartner, said: "Three years ago Gartner published research predicting that either catastrophe from IT failure, or a continuing history of lower-level failures would provoke either a governmental regulation or industry self-regulation of IT products and services."
He added that the current global economic climate is pushing the IT products and services sector towards a more heavily regulated future on a number of fronts.
Earlier this year, Ofcom decided to de-regulate the company's leased line offering.
