Power shortages not an issue for managed hosting firms

13/08/2009

Managed hosting services providers have hit back at suggestions that high electricity prices in the UK are forcing them to take their operations abroad.

Data centre operators in the UK said that recent claims made in the Times, which suggested that data storage demand was putting too much pressure on the National Grid and pushing up the price of electricity, were unfounded.

"The retail cost of electricity is rather different to the cost of electricity for commercial organisations", Phil Lydford, chief executive at e-shelter UK, said.

"And power for data centres is not only about cost, but how reliable it is, the certainty of supply," he added.

According to research from IT industry analysts IDC, global data storage is expected to double every 18 months.

The company said that there are currently 487 billion gigabytes of data stored around the world and this will increase by a factor of five by 2012.ADNFCR-1876-ID-19310958-ADNFCR
