Data growth not as fast for SMBs
11/08/2009

The huge amount of data growth that has occurred in the past five years has not affected small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) as much as it has impacted on large corporations, it has been claimed.
In an interview with Network Computing, Deepak Visweswaraiah, senior director of the Storage Software Group at the India Center of Excellence said that the amount of data stored by businesses has grown by a factor of ten in the last five years.
He claimed that as well as the amount of data created increasing, so has demand for data storage and backup.
However, Mr Visweswaraiah told the news provider that SMBs belong to lower commercial segments than their larger counterparts and although they have had to growth it has not been as dramatic.
Mr Visweswaraiah said that many small firms do not have the expertise to deal with data-related issues something which could be driving the growth in managed hosting and co location services.
According to Forrester analyst Phil Sayer, managed hosting services are thriving despite the ongoing economic downturn.
