SMEs 'well placed to deploy new technologies'

An IT expert has claimed that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could find themselves well-placed to take advantage of new IT technologies such as virtualisation and managed hosting solutions, despite the effects of the recession.
Martin Courtney, writing in Computing, said that although SMEs may have smaller IT budgets and limited bargaining power, they "are often more innovative and nimble than their corporate rivals".
He added that SMEs are increasingly embracing a move towards outsourcing, which can enable them to embrace the latest technological advances without having to make massive investments in hardware or personnel.
According to the webzine, Tim Jackson, chairman of technology consultancy Inflector, said: "This move will be pushed by a number of elements including virtualisation, a reduction in computer costs and the availability of faster network connections due to expanded broadband rollouts."
Recently, Jason Stamper predicted in Business Review Online that the uptake for virtualisation would be so strong that the sector will remain almost recession-proof.
