The move to virtualisation in the workplace can help companies reduce their IT costs significantly, according to one expert.
Pallavi Kathuria, director of the server business group for Microsoft India, told the EFY Times: "Virtualisation is a technology that can help customers dramatically reduce their IT infrastructure costs and enables organisations to save their IT costs through server consolidation, disaster recovery, rehosting of legacy applications and software test and development."
Ms Kathuria said that virtualisation, which allows the creation of multiple virtual machines on a single computer, allows several employees to use the same computer enabling a much more efficient use of hardware overall.
She added that virtualisation can also help businesses to reduce the amount of physical space they need for hardware and the amount companies need to spend on energy, which can help them make further savings.
Recently the IT operations manager for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust told Computing magazine that a move to virtualisation had helped his organisation save on space and costs.
