Business IT 'can help save the planet'

Technological developments in business IT can help reduce carbon emissions not only from the IT sector itself, but from other areas of business too, according to one expert.
Writing in Computing, Emma Fryer highlighted the need for IT to play its role in helping combat climate change, following a report by the consultancy firm Gartner which showed that the sector is responsible for 2 per cent of the world's carbon emissions.
She claimed that technologies such as business broadband can help reduce the carbon emissions of many different industrial sectors. Business broadband has revolutionised the way companies communicate over long distances, thus reducing the need for travel.
Ms Fryer explained: "Thanks to broadband we have the ability to videoconference and download digital content.
"Broadband has changed the whole telecoms marketplace and is leading to new, virtualised business models for high-impact activities such as travel."
Recently, the EU published a code of conduct for data storage centres which aims to encourage them to cut their emissions, which would help reduce the environmental impact of many companies' data backup and business continuity systems.
