According to Tech Radar, cloud computing marks a major change in the way data and software is hosted and used and is similar to the shift from in-house data storage to managed hosting.
The tech-news website claims that in the past chief technical officers though the best place to keep a server and therefore the company's data was in the office.
However, this mindset has given way to managed hosting in a data centre with added security guarantees.
Tech Radar believes that the next big shift will be to cloud computing, where IT services will be stored in multiple locations cloud computing.
The website uses the analogy of putting you cash in several bank accounts, saying: "Imagine putting each one of your pounds into a different bank account. If you did, then should one of the banks fail, you'd carry on as normal. The same can be said for cloud hosting."
According to the Fairway Consulting Group, the shift to cloud computing can be challenging for small and medium-sized businesses.
