New Ethernet switching unit unveiled

Nortel, a leading hardware firm, has launched a new Ethernet switching unit which it claims will enable high-performance Ethernet connections to perform better.
The new hardware unit, the Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 5600, has advanced features enabling the switches to be used in the edge, distribution and core layers of the network.
Up to eight of these new units can be stacked together, which could help companies get faster business broadband speeds than they have ever had before.
The units are aimed at facilitating unified communications, a sector which Nortel believes will grow in the future.
Joe Hackney, the president of Nortel's enterprise solutions division, told Fox Business News: "The new family of Nortel Ethernet switches we are introducing today are designed to not only deliver that performance needed to today, but to accommodate the evolving needs and capacity unified communications will require in the future."
Harting, an electronics firm, recently announced that it too had developed new Ethernet switching technology.
