Companies looking to cut WAN costs, says survey

Many companies consider cutting the cost of their wider area network (WAN) as a priority for business, according to a new poll.
The survey, conducted by Information Age in conjunction with Exponential-e, found that reducing network costs is a key goal for more than three-quarters of respondents, beating optimisation objectives such as the integration of disaster recovery or enabling software-as-a-service.
According to the poll, many companies continue to use dated frame relay technologies, which may be inhibiting their ability to cut costs.
Information Age said: "It's not hard to see why cost was such a dramatic influencer of network strategy: almost half said they use (often-expensive) leased lines, while a committed nine per cent continue to use dated frame relay technology."
Effective WAN networks can help companies with everything from internal communications to data management. Recently, one NHS trust revealed that WAN optimisation had helped it cut its courier costs dramatically.
