WAN helps hospital cut costs

A hospital in Kettering has cut its costs by making more effective use of its Wider Area Network (WAN) technology.
Computer Business Review reported that the Kettering General Hospital is now using its WAN infrastructure to transmit X-Ray images and MRI Scan results to other healthcare institutions where they are needed, which has helped it to reduce its printing and courier costs.
The picture archiving and communications (PACS) system which was put into place using the hospital's WAN can be used to send high-quality medical images between different sites faster than any courier could have done.
Phil Taylor, senior IT operations analyst at the Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust, said: "WAN optimisation enables us to extend our investment in PACS for cost savings and improved service across all of the Trust sites."
WAN optimisation can also help private sector companies communicate information more efficiently.
The technology is becoming increasingly popular, with Reuters reporting recently that the sector had recorded double digit growth figures.
