Microsoft has announced that two of its leading business software applications will now be available via cloud hosting, for businesses to use online - a move that shows the increasing importance of cloud hosting in today's business IT environment.
At a launch event in San Francisco, Stephen Elop, the head of Microsoft's Business Division, announced the launch of Microsoft Exchange Online, an email and calendaring system, and Microsoft SharePoint Online, a portal for business collaboration.
Mr Elop said: "Today, we bring business class communications and collaboration technologies to the cloud, and we are committed to delivering more capabilities in the months ahead."
The Guardian reported that the software giant had been testing the system in its beta version with the help of around 18,000 business clients.
Microsoft said that 1,500 businesses had signed up for its online services partner program and that 100 more were joining every week.
