The Premier League is implementing a cloud computing-style email hosting system in order to improve the security of its communications networks, it has emerged.
It has announced the signing of a deal with Webroot, an email hosting services provider, which will enable the league's employees to use a software-as-a-service system.
Simon Thunder, head of IT for the Premier League, said that the organisation needs round-the-clock email security to enable its staff to communicate with top-flight clubs and sponsors.
He added: "Not only have we been impressed by the greater manageability and better protection, but we are delighted by the exceptional customer support, all of which has instilled our own IT team with a renewed confidence in email security."
Managed hosting solutions such as software-as-a-service can bring benefits to companies of all sizes. Recently, Linda Moore wrote in Computing that small businesses could benefit from such third-party supplier arrangements as they eliminate an element of risk.
